Sony's Alpha DSLR-A230 is one and only the company's latest first appearance-level DSLRs. Announced in May 2009, it's the successor to the Of import A200, and inherits many an features from this in the beginning model including the indistinguishable 10.2 Megapixel CCD sensing element and built-in image stabilization which works with any lens you attach. So the internal spec is almost identical.
The starring changes to the A230 involve a new consistency shape that's smaller and ignitor than its predecessor and an easier control arrangement designed for DSLR beginners upgrading from a point-and-shoot camera. With the new consistence, Sony's also taken the opportunity to relocate the memory carte du jour door to the left root of the tv camera, and switch from Compact Flash to SD media, aboard and additional one-armed bandit for Memory Stick Pro Duo. These card slots are hidden behind a sliding door which too reveals a new HDMI larboard for connection to Overflowing Definition TVs, although at the cost of the classical composite TV output.
Sony has also introduced quaternity new lenses with a built-in 'Flowing Autofocus Motor' or SAM for short, including ii kit up models: the DT 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 SAM and DT 55-200mm f4-5.6 SAM.
Corresponding its predecessor, the A230 is the cheapest model in a range of three consumer DSLRs which share a whole lot in common with each other. As before the intense differences are the sensor and the mien of Live Sight and the tilting covert, although the three models also have a slightly different textured finish.
The cheapest A230 worthy (reviewed here and replacing the A200), features 10.2 Megapixels and a fixed 2.7in / 230k screen without Be View. The A330 (replacing the A300) employs the same 10.2 Megapixel sensor, but adds Live Vista and mounts the CRT screen along a vertically-tilting political platform for greater integrative flexibility. Then the A380 (replacing the A350) completes the line-up aside taking the A330 with its Live Catch and tilting screen, but switching its 10.2 Megapixel detector for one with 14.2 Megapixels. By doing this, Sony's effectively created three versions of the same DSLR, allowing you to choose the model which best suits your budget and requirements. This strategy also maximises exposure for the Alpha home in stores.

Like all Exploratory DSLRs, the main sensor is adorned on an adjustable platform which shifts to counteract television camera-shake. You won't witness the result through the viewfinder – or in Live View as this uses a different detector – but it testament work with any lens system you attach. This not only has toll-savings, but means you bother enjoy stabilization on lenses which virtually manufacturers wouldn't fit anti-shake facilities too, comparable standard 50mm models.
Responding to customer feedback, Sony's revamped the controls and user-interface for a more beginner-friendly experience. The default screen presentation diagrammatically indicates how the aperture tail end be victimised to check depth-of-field, and the shutter used to freeze action. Buttons and switches on the previous models receive also been either relocated or minimised to head off potential confusedness. Testing notes
We tested a final production Alpha A230 gushing firmware version 1.0. Following our convention of victimisation nonpayment manufacturing plant and best prime JPEG settings to test cameras unless otherwise stated, the A230 was set to L:10 Delicately JPEG quality, Auto White Balance, Multi-segment metering and the Standard Creative Style. High ISO NR and the D-Range Optimiser were set to their default Happening and Casebook settings respectively, except from our Unpeasant-smelling ISO Noise results where the latter was disabled as it can introduce stochasticity. SteadyShot stabilisation was enabled for all handheld shots and unfit for tripod-based tests.
